Every three years, PSMA’s Education Committee reviews and makes necessary updates to its set of inspection standards for onsite wastewater treatment systems in Pennsylvania. The current iteration of the Standards (2025) has been approved by PSMA’s Board of Directors and is the basis for PSMA’s inspector certification training program.

On April 6, 1989, the Pennsylvania Septage Management Association (PSMA) adopted the first set of Standards, formerly called Guidelines. In 2003, the Pennsylvania Septage Management Association joined with the National Onsite Wastewater Education and Research Foundation (NOF) to extend the reaches of the inspection program to a national audience.

PSMA/NOF issues Inspector Certification to candidates who have successfully completed the required training program. The Standard set forth and clarify the methods and criteria for conducting a proper PSMA/NOF inspection. Use of these Standards is restricted to persons who have successfully completed the PSMA/ NOF sanctioned training associated with these Standards.

Students who attend one of PSMA’s inspection certification training courses will receive a copy of the latest Standards.

Education Committee Chair Ray Erb thanked everyone on the Education Committee for donating substantial time & effort to reviewing and updated the PSMA Standards.
